Every year, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, holds a three-day plant-fest for its members. If there is anything left after the member-exclusive days of Friday and Saturday, the general public is welcome to buy it on Sunday. Last year I got to the Arboretum before the sale started on the first day and stood in line. I also made way too many impulse purchases. My strategy to avoid a repeat was to arrive shortly after the sale started on the first day this year. What I hadn't counted on was the entire parking lot by the main entrance being full. After parking in a more distant lot and legging it back to the main parking lot, I entered the tent to a scene of planter collectors' heaven.

Some plants were already completely sold out, and I got the last decent looking Hydrangea quercifolia 'Little Honey.' It was impossible to move without bumping into someone or being bumped. There was a huge line for paying by credit card, but I planned ahead and brought my checkbook, as the cash and check line is always much shorter. Because I had parked so far, I got a ride back to my vehicle in this:

Now that's what I call service! (It was also fun.) Here's my cache of goodies:

in addition to the Hydrangea, I also bought a Wisteria macrostachys 'Blue Moon' that I had been wanting, a Tiarella 'Pink Brushes' for which I had been searching for over a year, and a Tricyrtis 'Gilty Pleasures' which was strictly an impulse buy. (I'm proud of my restraint.)
But I wasn't done yet! On the other side of the Arboretum was the tent for picking up pre-ordered and pre-paid plants.

This is where I picked up a variegated Cornus alternifolia, a couple of Astrantia 'Moulin Rouge' and a dwarf Goldenrod.
Because all the Daffodils

and all the Magnolias were in full bloom,

and the Arboretum isn't all that close to home, I had to take a bit of a walk before I headed home with lots of great plants and a smile on my face.

MMD - sounds like a great sale! I have been looking for Goldenrod but have never seen it anywhere for sale. Lucky you!
Sounds like a fun day! I've read articles in magazines about the Morton Arboretum before and always wanted to visit. Is it the place that has a large display of lilacs?
Very nice selections MMD! The plant sale looks very exciting.
It's been a long time since I've visited the arboretum. I hope to rectify that this year. I'm sure it's changed a lot since I was there last, back when my girls were much younger.
I love the plant sales sponsored by botanical gardens...they usually have some great plants. MMD, you have some choice plants....I haven't seen Little Honey or the Pink Brushes Tiarella before, but both names give clues to their looks.
It sounds like it was a wonderful day!
Gail
Looks like you had fun! That oak leaf hydrangea will be a good one to grow. I just put one in yesterday in a corner shade garden. It doesn't have a variety name, just plain old hydrangea quercifolia. It's always nice to finally find something you've been looking for for a while like your tiarella!
Gina - you need to find a better nursery! All the ones by me carry at least one Goldenrod. If I could get it to you, I'd be happy to give you a piece (or 3) of my Solidago 'Fireworks.' I've had that for a long time & it needs division.
Rose - I'm sure the Morton Arboretum has Lilacs, but it is known more for its Crabapples. The place to see Lilacs is Lilacia Park in Lombard, exciting Lombard, which claims to be the Lilac capital of the world.
Garden Girl - the main changes are the children's garden, which is wonderful, and the hedge maze. In the summer they have theatre hikes, which are a blast. A play is performed outdoors and the players & audience change location with each scene.
Gail - If you are interested, the Morton Arboretum probably still has online the list of all the plants for sale Under the Tent. The selection is staggering. The Chicago Botanic Garden's sale is even bigger, which is why I prefer the Arborteum's sale. (Can you say "Bedlam with plants"?)
Dave - I'm a big fan of Oakleaf Hydrangeas. I have 'Snow Queen,' but I wanted one of the dwarfs for a spot out front to replace the Yew Green Mustache.
Excellent score. I just planted to Ivory Halo dogwoods, and am excited about them. Wish someone would sell some Little Honey hydrangeas around here!!
That looks like fun!!! I bet you are excited to get your plants planted and watch them all grow!!!
I'm so glad you were able to get the last 'Little Honey' hydrangea, MMD; it needs to be in your garden - such a lovely yellow leaf. And you found many other terrific plants as well, lucky you! Sounds like you had a wonderful day.
Nice haul, MMD! I haven't purchased any plants yet this year...but my garden is just now waking up. ;-)
OMGosh you lucky dog. A friend of mine usually goes to this sale too. I will have to call her to see if she went this year.
You were such a good girl only buying one impulse item. I am impressed. Can't wait to see where you plant everything.
Wow, what a great haul! And what great restraint... I don't think I could've been quite as good as you were today. :)
I'm sure it must be easier to have restraint when you're using a check instead of a credit card, am I right? What a wonderful day! I wish I could afford to be a member of a place like that. The closest one to here is probably in Milwaukee anyway though....
Mom would kill me if I bought any type of golenrod, she's highly allergic to it. Very pretty though!
What a wonderful time you had! I'm living vicariously! ;-)
MMD, I have to ask you a favor. Would you please head over and look at my snowdrop? It's blooming TODAY, and I need an ID. Thanks!
I'm in awe of your restraint--sounds like you had a list and you stuck to it! I'm afraid to even go to my arboretum's sale.
(In previous years, I've worked at it, but that was...too much work.)
Tiarella is one of my absolute favorite, favorite plants. It was one of the very first things I bought when I started gardening and it's the only thing from those early days that I still have.
Great choices. Tiarella is such a pretty woodsey looking little plant.I have never been to the plant sale at the arboretum. Usually find one closer to home. There are so many to chose from these days that it is easy to find quality and quantity. Were the prices up this year?
Gina, I don't have a decent goldenrod either. I keep hoping that one will drop in and grow but no such luck so far. Really should look for one but can not decide.
You're making me all nostalgic, MMD - we loved Morton Arboretum and Lilacia Park, and enjoyed the member sales. Your plants sound wonderful - especially the Hydrangea.
The Lombard Garden Club holds a lilac sale during the festival ...it's on May 9th this year and if they don't sell out the first day the members will be there the morning of the 10th, too. The Village of Lombard website even has a Bloom-o-meter to keep track of the lilacs.
Annie at the Transplantable Rose
I'm so glad you put up this post. I would never have known about this. And then the comments...
Thank you.
Benjamin Vogt - I like the look of those Ivory Halos, they seem never out of season.
Cindee - thanks for visiting! I'm chomping at the bit to plant these things, but the arboretum recommended waiting until the middle of May to do so. As it is sort of snowing now, I guess they're right.
Nan Ondra - I'm not surprised that you approve of my new Hydrangea. It was a pretty good time.
Dirty Knees - snow on the ground doesn't stop me from buying plants. Glad to hear your garden is coming to life.
Lisa - are you varcariously plant shopping?
Kim - Like I said, I went a little later so that some of the tempting items were sold out. Otherwise I doubt I could have been so restrained. There were so many great Sedums & Sempervivums that I had to avert my eyes & keep walking.
Cinj - are you sure she's allergic to Goldenrod? Usually, people are allergic to Ragweed (I am) which blooms at the same time & is not showy, so is not noticed.
Shady - sometimes vicarious shopping is the best. (It's definitely the cheapest!) I'm glad you got your Summer Snowflake identified.
Chuck B. - thinking about finding a place to put everything also helps in the restraint department. With this new one, I have 3 kinds of Tiarella. I'm trying to convince myself that 3 kinds is enough.
Gloria - the prices were pretty reasonable, about the same or a little less than most nurseries. I usually try to hit this sale, one by the local Boy Scouts, and a local native plant sale. I'll have to miss the last one this year, and the Boy Scout sale is always a surprise.
Annie - I bet it's hard not to have Lilacs in the spring. If we get all our Mother's Day shopping done ahead of time, DH & I might drag the kids to Lilacia Park. We haven't been there for several years. Thanks for the link.
Hi, County Clerk! Glad to provide the info. According to my improptu chauffer, the arboretum's sale gets busier ever year because their membership keeps increasing. They must be doing something right.
It does take a bit of "strategizing" to make it through a big sale like that. You done good!
Carol, May Dreams Gardens
Carol - I've learned from experience! And these kind of sales are definitely an experience.
