The garden is finally waking up from a long winter sleep. The Witch Hazel, Hammamelis x intermedia 'Sunburst,' is in full bloom.
It always amazes me how the Winter Aconite (Eranthis) emerges from the earth in bud,
and then opens during the course of the day.
Hellebore season is about to begin. Normally, the Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger) opens first, but this year it's not clear which will open first, H. niger,
a seedling Helleborus x orientalis,
or 'Ivory Prince.'
Yesterday, the first Crocus finally bloomed.
It's a lonely Crocus, all the others aren't even in bud yet. But the Daffodils, Tulips, and Scilla are sprouting. Soon, the garden will be full of an explosion of spring bloom.

Very nice MMD - and awesomely optimistic start to the season. Look forward to seeing the future months as your garden unfurls from its hibernation.
Beautiful photos, MMD.
This time of year is just so exciting!
Aren't snowdrops wonderful? Without them my Wisconsin garden would be bare at this time of year!
Hi MMD, you've got some good stuff to look forward to full frontal blooming! Great shots, especially the aconite. We don't have that one here, something about our soil is not right. I can't wait to see you late May garden. :-)
Frances
Happy GBBD Mr Mc D. My aconite isn't even showing yet. Hmmmm Maybe I planted them too deep. Hmmm
Hi there MMD ! Nice seeing bits of Spring in your garden .. I have aconite waiting to join the sunny world soon I hope : )
Hellebore .. I must have MORE !! Joy
Happy Garden Bloggers Bloom day!
Beautiful Snowdrops, witch hazel
and Crocus.
Ooh, aaah. Those are pretty much the blooms I should have in another week or so...
Good Morning MMD,
Loveliness is blooming in your garden. Sunburst is such a clear and fine yellow, hmm, where could I find a home for it? The witch hazels are my favorite trees right now...but I am fickle;) Ivory prince is beautiful, he just went in C&L a few weeks ago and I hope he blooms....Doesn't his bloom face upward better then other hellebores? Have a good day!
I love that lonely little crocus; perhaps he'll have company soon. The winter aconite is so cheery; that's another plant I don't have--I need to look over the fall bulb catalogs a little carefully come September:)
Your garden shows so much promise--just think what it will look like for the next bloom day!
MMD - What beautiful photos of the arrival of spring. We are still waiting, and present circumstances allowed me to post from 'abroad.'
Do you think that crocus knew today was bloom day? Nah... could it? Anyway, love the pics, you've got some blooms I don't have, like the witch hazel, I've got to get one of those!

Hi, Stuart, thanks for visiting! It's easy to be optimistic at the start of the garden season, before the reality of late frosts and bugs hits.
HM - yes, the excitement is why spring is my favorite season.
Ms. WI - TGFS - thank goodness for Snowdrops!
Frances - I can't believe there's something that grows in Chicagoland that can't be grown in TN.
Lisa - I didn't see any sign of my Aconites until yesterday, when they started sprouting & 1 bloomed, so they might be there somewhere.
GJ4M - yes, you must have more Hellebores.
Thanks, Cathy!
Monica - soon, this will all be yours (or something very much like it).
Gail - the Witch Hazels are my favorites now too, but in a couple months that will probably change to the Dogwoods. I'll have to find out how 'Ivory Prince' holds his flowers, this will be the first time it's bloomed for me.
Rose - April brings an embarrassment of blooming wealth. It's my favorite month of the year.
It's wonderful to see all of these plants emerging from the earth, isn't it? You've done a great job of capturing their awakening.
Isn't it exciting to watch a new season come to life in our garden MMD! You have so much to anticipate right now. Everyday another wonderful bloom to enjoy! Beautiful blooms!
Its fun to see the growth emerging. Very nice. Helne
MMD, wonderful title for your garden this month. It is like watching an awakening. But, alas, mine is still pretty much sleeping. I think I will have to wait til next month for blooms. :{ Yours, however are lovely. I've not seen Winter Aconite before, but love it's bright yellow. Happy spring!
It must be great to experience the awakening. The Sunburst sure is sunny but I simply adore the snowdrops and winter aconite. It's all great!
The Witch Hazel blooms are beautiful, but I love the look of the emerging Hellebores. The crocus looks delightful and I imagine there will be many more blooms to join this one!!
Yea for snowdrops, and for hamamelis. and of course, for crocus and (allow me my hellebore envy) and for the emerging of spring for you. I'm not quite there yet. Maybe next month....
Your early spring bloomers are beautiful MMD. Maybe I'll get on the ball and plant some bulbs this fall. Can't wait to see those hellebores!
Life in the garden starts again with the first crocus! Lovely photos.
Spring arrives, and gardeners from climates with real winters rejoice.
I have snowdrops too, but strangely there is no sign of flowers on them yet. Just a few inches of leaves.
Awesome aconite. And of course those snowdrops are lovely. I had a big clump like that, but we had to pave over it and it never really came back.
So that's why I don't pay much mind to the scattered ones I have now.
Lovely start of springtime in your garden.
I am charmed by the Hammamelis x intermedia 'Sunburst,
K
Lovely to share your garden's spring awakening :)
What a cute crocus bloom. I keep wondering why I seem to be so unable to remember to plant some bulbs in the fall.
The Helleborus x orientalis looks like it will have a beautiful color!
It's interesting to go from blog to blog tonight and see not only the different stages of Hellebore, but all the varieties- I shouldn't have a problem picking out a few when I'm ready to add them! The Winter Aconite reminded me that I need to continue reading Down the Garden Path by Beverley Nichols! Happy almost spring :)
Okay, that's it! I'm planting hellebores. First your pictures and then finding out that Diana K. is actually growing them here in Austin has pushed me over the edge.
Great job of capturing their charm.
At long last...I have been checking the spot where I planted the winter aconites but there is still a pile of snow there. Yours are so pretty.
Very nice! The photos are inspiring! (Just borrowed a camera from a friend and kind of intimidated, but it will be worth the trouble. )
I have that very same crocus. It's a tiny little thing, isn't it.
Welcome back to the unfrozen outdoors!
Yes, your garden is waking up and about to jump out of bed. So much promise pushing out of the soil!
I must plant crocus this fall. I used to not care for them because they bloom so close to the ground, I am beginning to see their beauty. Hope your weather warms up soon and stays that way.
That single crocus is such a diva isn't she. Blooming before any of the others show up. Happy GBBD.
Your post makes me wish that I'd planted some crocus last fall. I will have to do that this year!
I love your photos, I just imagine them rubbing their eyes after waking up!
This time of year is nearly the best...our gardens are about to open up and we have the lovely season ahead of us!
Katarina
Hey MMD, it looks like the cold didn't even nip anything. Beautiful beginnings. Can't wait to see the rest of the show. Happy GBBD.~~Dee
You have beautiful photography, but all your plants look like they are crawling out of the ground reluctantly. Maybe it is still cold.
Oh, I can't WAIT until my snowdrops colonize into perfect little drifts like yours! That's such a great photo, MMGD.
By the way, did your 'Ivory Prince' foliage not hold up very well over the winter? I haven't had to cut any of mine back, and it looks wonderful... I wonder why yours wouldn't have held up similarly well? :(
I like seeing when certain plants are blooming in different areas. Your witch hazel is looking lovely, while mine has been done flowering for more than a month.
Pretty clump of snowdrops!
It is looking spring-like around there! I've never had an eranthis, it looks interesting! Hellebore Haven, you should call it...although if it's anything like my yard, the squirrels are eating all of my tulip bulbs and I don't even have most of them in the ground yet! They've been taking them out of the pots and leaving the pots behind! arrghh!
That's quite a bounty of blooms for mid-March, MMD! Your lovely well-drained soil gets some of the credit, I guess, but it takes someone who believes in Spring to plant the variety.
Happy GBBD!
Annie at the Transplantable Rose
It's starting! Well, nothing is starting in my yard yet, but I'm happy to see it going in yours. Enjoy those sweet little blossoms. VW
Hi MMD,
It's getting really colorful around your place! We're still waiting on most things, but oddly enough, I discovered a peony starting to come up yesterday (one of our new ones from last year). We have one crocus blooming and of course the snowdrops.
I've got a question: what do you think of that winter Aconite? I've looked at it for years in catalogues and thought about planting some ... would you recommend it?
Our hellebores are nowhere near as advanced as yours and still look pretty ratty. Time to deadleaf them I guess?
I guess it's natural to be filled with wonder and envy when touring other people's gardens. I just never get tired of looking at the Galanthus (which don't grow in the south). They look so spring-like to me which is strange because I've never seen one in life.
You and I seem to have the same flowers blooming, or on the verge of doing so. I would have thought you'd be further ahead than me.
Hurrah - spring at last at Squirrelhaven! It looks like you're catching up with us fast :)
Today I'm taking advantage of a virus that's invaded my system to spend time visiting garden blogs- yours is at the top of the list, mmg. Hope you're not getting soaked too badly today.
