Fun With Forcing & Indoor Plant Update

With a light layer of snow on the ground, there's not much going on outside, so it's time to turn to inside.  It's been several years since I forced bulbs, and I couldn't be more pleased with their performance this year.  The no-brainer Hyacinth kit was a great success.  This is 'Delft Blue.'  I prefer growing Hyacinths in the house, where their strong perfume can be fully enjoyed.  I also find it hard to incorporate them in the garden, as they always look stiff and formal. I was very impressed with this kit because it sent up two bloom stalks.  They are nearly done blooming now, having been in bloom for about two weeks now.
These 'Lydia' Tulips I picked up at the Morton Arboretum's bulb sale last fall. I potted them up and stuffed them in a cabinet in my unheated garage.  When they started to sprout, late in January, I brought them into the house.  They're all faded now, and probably would have lasted longer had I not put them near a vent.  (Note to self:  keep Tulips in a cooler place.)
My continuing adventures with indoor plants have had mixed success.  The tiny African Violet I put in my head terrarium is half rotted because I overwatered it before I went to Florida.  I expect it to recover, but it will be a long time before it blooms again.  My potted cutting of a Sweet Potato Vine (Impomoea) is on death's doorstep.  I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with it.  I'm tempted to cut off a little of what's left and try to get that to root.

And now the good news:  the Primula is hanging in there, still blooming despite my earlier neglect.  I think this one's a keeper. The huge potted Pelargonium is enjoying the increased daylight and is putting out new growth.  And, most encouraging of all, my tiny Kalanchoe is going to bloom again! This has to be a personal first, getting a houseplant purchased in bloom to rebloom.

Hi MMD, all beauties. I love that silver cup for the hyacinth too. These do very well when planted out in the garden after growing inside and will bloom for years to come. I like them in the garden, they make great companions to the early tulips. Both are kind of formal so they look good together then fade away together to let the more blousey stuff take over. We are proud of your successes. :-)

I don't know why I didn't force bulbs this year. Now am so wishing I had.

Good job on getting the kalanchoe to rebloom! The delft blue hyacinth is lovely. Nice to grow them inside as you don't have to leave your home to enjoy.

Thanks for the info on the thalictrum. It is one I shall look for as I don't have it growing in there yet. I have it on my 'desired plants' excel spreadsheet so I can keep track.

Ahh, you do sound ready for spring to arrive...it will come. It will creep up from the south in a warm wind.

Now, could you send us some rain if we send that warm wind?

I have no color inside so that looks grand to me.

I love it when I see the way people force blooms. I have never tried it, might look into it next winter.

Your flowers have been a boon to the spirit this Winter, haven't they? And hurrah for your kalanchoe! :-)

I hope my Kalanchoe will re-bloom as well as yours. :) Your hyacinth is lovely -- I prefer them inside as well. Their scent can't be beat.

Hello MMD, I love your pink tulips! Nice color...and I do agree with your hyacinth assessment. They clash with delicate spring wildflowers in my garden and probably yours, too. Spring hurry up and visit Squirrelhaven! gail

Beautiful Tulips, Hyacinths! feels
like spring! well at least towards the weekend it will....
Kalanchoes are great, they bloom only on shorten day light..you'll
notice they won't bloom in the summer time..funny isn't it?

Ooh, those are pretty. It's looking very spring-like in your house, MMD.

There's something wonderful about having bulbs flowering indoors at this time of year. You did great! Good going with the Kalanchoe as well. What colour will the blooms be?

Gorgeous, and such a nice variety. I've only had luck with paperwhites indoors.

Hmmm ... a cabinet in an unheated garage? I need to remember that technique next fall. Great looking display!

Frances - the Hyacinth container was part of the kit. There were also metallic red and gold containers.

Robin - I'm wondering why I haven't been forcing bulbs the last couple of years. It's so easy.

Tina - You're welcome. I'm trying to gain as many followers for Anemonella/Thalictrum thalictroides as possible. It's such a great little plant.

GJ4M - my African Violet would have been fine if I hadn't tried to keep it from drying out while I was gone. They like it on the dry side.

Nancy - actually, it seems that spring tends to blow in on a west wind. I wish we could send you some rain, you really need it.

FGG - I'm glad you liked them.

Darla - You might need to get prechilled bulbs, such as the one in my Hyacinth kit. I got it at Trader Joes.

Lisa - thanks! I'm having fun with my new photo software.

Shady - I think I might become a Kalanchoe collector.

Nancy Bond - it's amazing how just one Hyacinth can scent a whole room.

Gail - I think these Tulips are my new favorite. The girl loves them too.

Cathy - plants can be very strange. I won't need the Kalanchoe to bloom in the summer, so it can sleep then if it wants.

Pam - I'm so glad I decided to force bulbs this year, as spring outside is taking it's time getting into gear.

Kate - it's a white flowered Kalanchoe. I'm not usually a fan of white flowers, but these looked so good with the foliage.

Hi, NSC - try a bulb kit next year and move on from there. I've done Paperwhites once, but I didn't like the scent.

MMD, I think they'd be a great thing to collect. Did you see Nancy's (Soliloquy) kalanchoe? It's a beauty!

Everything's looking good at your house, MMD! I've made a note to myself about your advice for forcing bulbs--next year I will definitely get an earlier start. I'm still waiting for blooms here:)

As diligent as I am in the summer about watering containers and the garden when necessary, I am the complete opposite in the house. I still have a few plants hanging on in the garage, but I forget to water them on a regular basis. You'd think I would do better:)

Your hyacinths look lovely in the vases...I just planted some in my garden-so I will see how tall and leggy they become. I had some yrs. back but wanted to try them again. Haven't done any indoor forcing except for paperwhite this winter. They turned out nicely, especially after I added vodka (someone suggested that) and they didn't get leggy at all.
I have a kilanchoe and it's still doing well and my primrose were beginning to look horrible, so I finally got them under a plant light and they are bouncing back.
Before I started blogging I had only african violets inside. Now, because of all of you blotanical nuts, I have broken down and am now the owner of 14 indoor plants (I may be missing one or two) and a ton of seedlings, seedtrays and hopeful plants-in-the-making! Thanks a lot:)
Actually, it's a great thing, and it's been fun learning through your posts and many others.

I've never been good at forcing bulbs - I end up with leaves and stunted flowers. I realise my talents must lie elsewhere (lol).
I think your tulips are very pretty. They look very natural.

Layanee said...

You are right about the hyacinths I think, hard to place in the garden and so very much appreciated in the warm house with their heady fragrance. Kudos to you for getting that kalanchoe to rebloom.

After seeing how great the forced bulbs look I think I will try next year. The second photo is very pretty, the color is so soft.

Shady - don't tempt me!

Rose - out of sight, out of mind. With me, even if they are in sight, I often forget to water the plants.

Jan - I think I'd rather drink the Vodka than share it with my plants! Bloggers are such a great inspiration.

Easygardener - I'm sorry you've not had luck with indoor bulbs. I can't imagine why they wouldn't bloom.

Layanee - thanks! I Hyacinths and the style of our gardens just don't mesh well.

Catherine - yes, you definitely should try them next year. I hope I don't forget to force some next year too.

Hi MMD - I love the photos - the 'Lydia' tulips looks like a Dutch still life.

MMD, I am so with you-hyacinths are much more enjoyable indoors where their fragrance can be appreciated. I love those tulips. What a pretty color.

If you repot your violet and cut away the root rot it will recover faster. Been there-done that. :}

I've never liked or bothered with hyacinths before, but someone gave me some for Xmas this year and they were super - as is your Delft Blue. Definitely on my list for next winter.

Monica the Garden Faerie said...

I plant my hyacinths alongside my front porch, so I get that great smell whenever I come and go. I love them!

Mr. McGregor's Daughter said...

HappyMouff - thanks! 'Lydia' flowers are nice sized as well as having a beautiful form.

Beckie - thanks for the advice about the African Violet. I will do that now that I have a bit of time.

Sue Swift - Hyacinths are definitely the best of the forced bulbs.

Monica - I've heard of people who don't like the scent of Hyacinths, but I can't imagine it.

Hi MMD,
You did quite the nice job forcing your bulbs ... they are fantastic! I especially like that "Blue Delft" hyacinth ... I may have to see about getting a few of those.

I like those tulips you have even if they are pink (after all, they are tulips!!!) and I think we have (or had) a few of those in the mix out front because they look familiar.

Glad to hear your primrose is doing well! I'll be interested to see how it does for you outside. Just give it a consistently moist spot to grow and not much direct light and hopefully it will do well for you!

Mr. McGregor's Daughter said...

IVG - I think the Primrose is going to have to stay in a container, as there is no consistently moist spot anywhere on the property.
