This headstone is from a cemetery a short walk from my house. The oldest graves, such the subject of my entry, date from the late 19th Century. There's even the grave of one of the former owners of the land of which Squirrelhaven was once a part.
It's a charming little cemetery, but easily missed by busy commuters passing it by every day. November is the month of remembrance, with All Souls' Day and Veterans' Day. It's a time to reflect on the transient nature of life, and to give thanks for the wonderful people in it and the joys we so often take for granted.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I like the first photo with the hand pointing up. I recently took a tour of an old cemetery in Ann Arbor, and apparently that hand is a pretty common ornamentation (weren't they *sure* where the occupant was going?!). ;-)
Does it say his name is "Dark Carl"? I sure hope so! And we think alike - I was considering entering this contest with a gravestone too.
At least the finger is pointing in the right direction!
And at least it's the right finger!
I also had some shots of a pioneer cemetery in the country near my sister's place... obviously there is a thinkingalikeness thing happening here.
Simply beautiful my friend. Hope you win.~~Dee
Hi.
Wow...works on so many different levels, and mixes-in humor for good measure.
I thought it was the "other" finger when I first glanced at it, and was thinking... who's rock and roll grave IS that?
Good luck.
ESP.
Great photo, MMD! Perfectly on theme in so many ways, and a nice photo to boot.
Great post... I'm going to have to head over to see about this Meme. Isn't Nan so creative with her meme subjects? :-)
This is good MMD! Good luck. I love the first photo, too! gail
What a great way to interpret the theme love the top image

I also enjoyed your take on the theme, and the photograph is beautiful too.
That first photo is so clever! Good luck!
I love old gravestones. They have an elegance that modern marble ones lack. Did you happen to catch Martha Stuart Living last month? She had a great article and pictoral on old gravestones.
Thanks, everybody.
Monica - maybe they put the hand on the graves of those who were directionally challenged.
Kris - sorry, it's Dr. Phd. Carl. What can I say, great minds think alike.
Sweet Bay - one would hope so, in a church cemetery.
Shady - actually, it was the judge, Joshua McCullough who selected the theme. This is going to be a very interesting contest.
ALEby Lauren - Nope, I don't watch Martha. Maybe I should, if she's talking about old cemeteries.
Helen - LOL!
ESP - it seems the photo might work as a Rorschach. ;^)
I love old cemeteries. There is something about walking thru them that helps my perspective.

I am drawn to old cemeteries during autumn for some reason - so your beautiful photos resonate!!
I love old cemeteries and love your photos. Great metaphorical interpretation!
I love your take on this contest, MMD! The first photo is great--I like the finger pointing upward, and I'm also wondering about the inscription, "Dark Carl"??
Thanks for visiting my blog today!
I love your pics too, especially the top one pointing at the last of the autumn leaves! Great lines, lighting, and the content is wonderful!
Most definitely reflects the end of the line. At least it's pointing up! Great take on the subject and love the photo setting. good luck!
Marnie, Tracey & Jean - I'm glad I'm not the only one admiring the old cemeteries.
Rose - he's Dr. Ph Carl, as opposed to Black Francis, former frontman of The Pixies.
Thanks, Melody!
Teresa - maybe it's a reminder to always keep looking up?
What great photos (and an interesting personal connection you have to the cemetery's residents!). I love that the hand points right up the tree. That's where I'd like to end up, too.
I really love this photo and your interpretation. And it's so fun to visit a spot close to you. I love cemeteries for their history, and thank you for this chance to see this one. Great job!
Very nice! I like the finger pointing upwards. That is so clever. good job and good luck on your entry.

Fun photo! I'm amazed at American graveyards. In the small town in Germany where I'm from, you rent the plot for 20, 30 years, and then they dig a bit and the next coffin (and a new stone) are put in that place.
Love it!
