On Snowdrop Watch

It happens every few years, the snow doesn't come, the ground doesn't freeze, and the Galanthus elwesii, the giant snowdrop, begins to bloom early. It has been unusually warm recently, with highs in the 40sF, with occasional days of highs in the 20sF. Up and down, flirting with the melting/freezing point goes the thermometer, confusing the poor plants. But Galanthus don't mind. They do what they always do, only now, there's no snow to conceal buds transforming to blooms. Any day now...

How exciting! To think of having snowdrops in December, I never realized there were early ones like that until last year, even in your zone! Brilliant!

I don't have any blooming yet. I have seen them pictured several places. Lucky you.

So exciting to be on the verge of blooms! I hope that they withstand the inevitable cold snap whenever it comes!

I love the first snowdrop....of spring. It is somehow just wrong for them to bloom now but perhaps it is a gift before a long winter.

Beautiful! I just planted snowdrops this year for the first time. No sign of them yet, but maybe that's for the best. Happy New Year!

Early?!?!! Wow... I had no idea that they might show up so soon. We've had similar conditions here, so I'm going to make a point of looking for my snowdrops tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up!

My first snowdrop opened fully just before Christmas and oh what a cheering sight. May the new year treat you and those that you love kindly and may all that graces your garden flourish xxx
